Grades K through 5 |
School: Edmund A Burns Elem School, Charleston, SC |
Planned By: Tatia Williams |
Original Author: Tatia Williams, Charleston |
Objective: The learner will decide from 50 career STEM choices and create a webpage showing themselves at that career and describing it is detail.
2nd Objective: The learner will learn about STEM careers.
K,1,2,3,4,5 and on. For kindergarten this will be a basic 1 sentence lesson. By the time we are at 3rd grade this should be a well formed paragraph. 4th and 5th should have a well-formed essay. This would increase to different grades.
Students will be first introduced to the four main groups of career choices. Science Mathematics, Engineering and technology. Then 50 occupations from those to choose from. Needless to say this is a very lengthy lesson that could easily go all the way to a semester project.

Chose your favorites and cover 10 per grade K-1st 10 careers 2 20 careers 3rd grade 30 and so on.
Next have them choose the one they think they will be doing out of the choices in 20 years.
Have them write like they presently are doing the job and describing what they do. Using digital cameras have them add pictures for the careers and create a webpage about them in that career.
For further emphasis do scientific studies or have them dress up like they would in the career.
Then take pictures.
Make sure you go over exactly how long they will be in school and what types of grades they need.
For Assessment grade the webpages using rubrics. If you do not have webpage software like me instead do this in paint which is on all computers and just print out and post each in the classroom.
For slow learners encourage them to do as much as possible. Many famous people just needed one person who lit the spark that changed the world.
