Students are asked to start thinking of items (must be lightweight) that represent them. This is often difficult, especially when a student is not particularly materialistic. Or maybe their main interest is something big like cars or horses. In that case, I encourage them to bring in a photo of a large item. Students must also consider the composition and layout of their scannogram. Will these items look cohesive together?
Once the students have their items, they need to lay the items out on a flatbed scanner in a pleasing composition and scan. Scanning should be done at a resolution of 150 to 300. Images should be saved as a JPEG. Cropping, cutting, copying & pasting can be done in programs such as Adobe Photoshop. Students may also play with contrast, color enhancement, filters, etc. I encourage the students to "save as" from their original scan to their discs. I also encourage students to make 3 versions of their scannograms & to choose their best to pass in for a grade.
