When you have a section of material to teach that can be broken down into assignable pieces, give each student one part to research and present. Doing 25 separate presentations will take too much class time, though, so this is where Pop-up PowerPoint comes in! I'll use the King Arthur legend as an example, but you could do this with any subject or content. Assign each student one character from the legend, and tell them they will make one PowerPoint slide that gives the "talking points" about their character (not in complete sentences). They should also have one graphic image, preferably taken with a digital camera, and the slide should be attractive.
Take the students to a computer lab or media center and give them one class period to research their character and make their slide. You make the opening slide which gives the topic to be taught. Save all the slides on your flash drive, then merge them into one PowerPoint presentation. In the next class, show the PowerPoint, not letting the students know in what order the slides will appear. This will force them to pay attention, because they will never know when theirs will come up. When it does, they are to "pop up" and tell the class about the character they researched. This accomplishes the research and the presentation in two class periods, and the students love it. |
