Grades 9 through 12
School: Brewer Middle School, Brewer, ME
Planned By: Paulette Clapp
Original Author: Paulette Clapp, Brewer
Objective: To develop a working web site for a school/community family to help increase awareness and produce donations.

Materials: Computer, Dreamweaver Software, Digital Camera, Adobe Photoshop, Internet, Interviews with Family Members, Email, Phone

Procedure: Students to meet with family of young man to learn about the disease, discuss their wishes for page appearances, talk about this young persons likes, interests, favorite colors, sports teams, hobbies, etc. Take class time to research the illness through the internet to better understand daily circumstances and life quality and life expectancy. This step was a big help to my students. They recognized the serious nature of the illness and came to appreciate the daily hurdles other people face each day. This gave them the desire and work ethic to undertake this project in a mature manner. Students sketched out pages, selected appropriate colors, searched for fonts that related to the child's age, incorporated digital photos supplied by the family, and put their heart and soul into this endeavor. After countless emails, phone calls, and class visits, the project was completed. The local TV station came in to film my class as they came face to face with the child for the first time. We had met the family but not the child. It was no easy task to get him to our school, but the family was willing to make the effort. It was a truly inspirational moment when we all met for the first time. The local TV station televised the event on the evening news. A moment in education that will be remembered always.
