Grades K through 5
School: Taylorsville Elementary School, Taylorsville, NC
Planned By: Michelle Robinson
Original Author: Michelle Robinson, Taylorsville
Based on our previous writing test scores, the students at Taylorsville have difficulties with their writing. We have many students who just lack the personal experiences that are required to write a personal narrative. I have found that many of my students find it easier to talk about their stories before actually writing them. However, being first graders, many of the students forget the DETAILS of their stories. Allowing for students to first go out and take pictures of their experiences, then bring those pictures in to discuss them with a classmate or teacher will allow students to write that added detail that once would have been forgotten. Students would also be opened to the their classmates experiences and would gain from their insight. It is proven that students learn best from their own experiences and are motivated by activities that are fun and interactive. After the students are finished with their pictures, they can submit them to the yearbook staff for consideration of use in the school's annual yearbook.
