Subject(s): Foreign Language
Grades 9 through 12
School: Loyola College Prep School, Shreveport, LA
Planned By: Erin Berry
Original Author: Erin Berry, Shreveport
At the beginning of the year, most teachers offer some sort of ice breaker to help students get to know one another.

This year's ice breaker will allow students not only to get to know each other within their class hour, but also reach out to other students taking Spanish.

Spanish I - Create a paper caption that states your name and something favorite.

Example: Me llamo Rebecca. Me gusta Hannah Montana.

Spanish II - Create a paper caption that states one lie and two truths about yourself. Don't indicate which is the lie! This is a common ice breaker used to help students get to know each other better.

Example: Tengo seis hermanos. Me gusta arroz con pollo. No bailo muy bien. (I have six brothers, I like rice and chicken. I don't dance very well.)

The teacher's responsibility is to monitor captions for grammar, spelling, appropriateness, and legibility. In addtion, the teacher will capture and collate digital pictures of all students on a website. Each group of pictures will be one class web page.

The technology coordinator will be responsible for creating a password protected web space where these pages can be stored. Only students and the teacher will be given the password.

The teacher will create a scavenger hunt list that can be completed at home or in the computer lab.

The list could include questions like:

-Find two students who like the same movie star.

-Find 2-3 Spanish II students who are not in your own class.
Write down their name and your guess at their "lie".

If necessary, approach this student outside of class and ask them <<in Spanish>> about their lie and/or truths.

This exercise could also be repeated with common phrases, basic vocabulary words, etc. Students could simply hold up the printed words or they could act out the vocabulary word being demonstrated. The scavenger hunt activity could be repeated or the pictures could be arranged in more of a flashcard format to make vocabulary drill less dull. It would be like studying with all of your friends instead of alone at home!

Next step: add sound. Students with excellent pronunciation skills could provide the audio to along with each vocabulary word.
