Keywords: Cultures, Book Making, slide show
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Social Studies
Grades 3 through 5
School: Mammoth Heights Elementary, Parker, CO
Planned By: Tiffany Regan
Original Author: Tiffany Regan, Parker
Objective: The learner will learn about their cultural heritage and share that knowledge with the class.

Standards: Knows what constitutes a culture
Knows how cultures celebrate historic events.
Knows how families are alike and different in other countries.

To culminate our study of cultures around the world, the students will participate in a cultural day fair. Students and parents are encouraged to discuss family heritage and traditions that have been passed down. On the day of the fair, family members are invited to attend and to help their child present information about a family tradition or family heritage. Students can bring in an artifact or food to share with the class.
Students will be given the opportunity to sample food items from many different cultures. While the class is eating, the presentations will begin. At the end of the presentations, each student will write down three facts that they learned, their favorite presentaion, and a country that they might like to visit in the future.
For each presentation, a digital photo will be taken. Photos will also be taken of the artifacts, food, and families in attendance.
The students will use the photos to write a book about the event. Each child will recieve a photo and will write a paragraph describing what is in the photo. The paragraphs and photos will be compiled into a bound book for the classroom.
The pictures will then be uploaded to our classroom website and also put into a slideshow. The students can use the paragraphs that they wrote to digitally record their voice for the slideshow.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Learn to write a narrative recount. Writing a recount of the fair for the class book is an excellent follow up to the narrative recount lesson
Follow-Up
The book will be placed in the classroom for students to read during DEAR time. Also, the same procedure will be done for other school activities, events, and field trips. By the end of the year we will have a collection of published books that reflect our learning through out the year. The digital photos will be added to the slideshow.
