Lesson Plan
1. Students will take a pre-assessment asking them to identify all of the parts of speech in a given sentence.
Sample sentence: After the basketball game, the losing team quickly left the crowded gym.

2. The class will review the definitions for nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, adverbs, prepositions, and prepositional phrases using the Partsofspeech Flipchart.

3. In partners, students will practice identifying parts of speech based on a color code. Each pair will code one sentence on a piece of paper and then on the Promethean board for the rest of the class.

4. Students will take a quiz on the Flipchart using Activexpressions. This quiz requires them to identify a selected word’s part of speech and to identify parts of speech in a sentence.

5. Students will rate their confidence in identifying parts of speech.

6. Finally, students will write a paragraph showing their knowledge and ability to use parts of speech to enhance their writing.

Prompt: During the weekend, students usually spend their time relaxing and doing the hobbies that they enjoy. What do you do during your weekends? Write a well-developed paragraph in which you describe what you do during your weekends. Make sure you use at least 5 adjectives and at least 5 adverbs in your paragraph to help make your paragraph even more descriptive.
