STUDENT OBJECTIVES STUDENTS WILL learn basic and advanced camera applications and be able to demonstrate their knowledge STUDENTS WILL learn about the art of making a great photograph emphasizing composition STUDENTS WILL create a portfolio of photographs emphasizing the Ten Rules of Composition STUDENTS WILL analyze their works picking one piece to create a final oil painting using a modern art history style STUDENTS WILL review and understand all major modern art movements learned earlier STUDENTS WILL evaluate one photo and one art movement to create a final oil painting on stretched canvas. STUDENTS WILL understand that beauty and great compositions can be found everywhere, even in their hometown
PROJECT PROCESS Art students in a classroom with only one small window have a hard time visualizing interesting compositions that is just outside their school walls. Too often students rely on magazine photographs where the composition and subjects are already decided on. Students will review modern art movement from Impressionism and Expressionism to Super realism and Neo-expressionism. Students will be taught using the outline. WEEK 1- Students will learn the fundamental camera operations. Teach the Ten Elements to photo Composition including Rule of Thirds, Balance, Leading lines, Symmetry, Pattern, Viewpoint, Background, Depth, Image Cropping and Experimental. Students will prepare their canvases. Quiz on camera operations. WEEK 2- Students will start taking photos, first in and around school, and ending with a one half day field trip to Prescott’s downtown and local parks. Students will critique and evaluate their photos, mat and display their 3-4 best works and pick one to create their painting with. Students will also review techniques in oil painting learned earlier. WEEK 3- Students will use one photograph to create a final oil painting using the style of one of the great masters. Emphases will be placed on a strong composition done with the camera. WEEK 4- Students will finish paintings after two critiques and evaluate their work. Artwork will be displayed in the community center, press release and an opening for artists, parents and public.
STUDENT WILL BE EVALUATED BY FOLLOWING THE MATRIX 10% TEST ON CAMERA OPERATION, 10 RULES OF PHOTOGRAPHY COMPOSITION AND MODERN ART MOVEMENTS 10% CRITIQUES 20% DISPLAYED PHOTOGRAPHS 50% FINAL OIL PAINTING AND SELF EVALUATION 10% FINAL VOCABULARY AND ESSAY TEST
Our art departments, with declining budgets, have not had the funds to purchase the extras that make a department better. We have been trying to purchase digital cameras for over 5 years.

***Students will be matching any grant money with a bake sale and art sale so that a total of 3 cameras can be purchased. This will give students a sense of participation and ownership.
***The cameras purchased will be used by many classes- for many projects- for many years to come.
