School: Goddard Middle School, Glendora, CA
Planned By: Laura Purington
Original Author: Laura Purington, Glendora
Introducton: Beginning with directed lessons, I will teach students the basics of proper web site design, copyright law, and journalistic writing. I will also demonstrate the use of HTML codes that web developers use to create web pages.

Guided Practice: Students will have guided practice creating their own websites about a topic of their interest. This will give them practice coding in HTML and designing web sites with their audience in mind. They will incorporate photos, clip art, video clips, and text to create their sites.

As an independent project, each student will next be responsible for designing and producing a portion of our Goddard Gazette web site that the parents of our middle school can access.

Students will be assigned news stories, features, or sports events to cover. They will conduct interviews and do research to write appropriate articles for the web site.

They will need to incorporate graphics into their sites, and students will need to obey copyright law for all clipart, photos, and graphics used on their web pages. Being able to uitilize a gallery of clipart from a collection that gives us permission for use on websites would be ideal. So many students think nothing of violating copyright infringements because it is so easy to do with the Internet. This lesson will emaphasize the importance of adhereing to the law.

Producing a web site such as this will incorporate many skills, not only technology skills, but writing, photography, graphic arts, and journalism as well.
