Age Group: Pre-k

Goal/Objective: To get the children familiar with pictures of people and places in their community.

Needed:

Digital camera

Community to walk around and visit (post office, pizza shop, grocery store)

Map

Permission slips for children to go out in community

Lesson:

Children go for a walk in the community/neighborhood and explore different parts like the post office, grocery store. They take pictures of the people and places they see and they can draw pictures of what they saw and what they talked about with the people.

When we go back to the classroom we review the adventure and who, what we saw and we make a map for the children to get the concept of space and value of the community. We print the pictures of the places and people we saw and put on display with the children’s comments and interviews they had with the community.

This not only reinforces their skills for navigating in their neighborhood, it shows how people are there in the community for different things and can be there if they need them to mail a letter or to buy food for the house.

We would send a letter home to their parent/guardians to explain what we did that day and to develop further involvement and discussions at home.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
We can further explore this through the internet and videos sent in by Parent/guardians.
