School: Evans Middle School, McKinney, TX
Planned By: Leslie Booth
Original Author: Leslie Booth, McKinney
The students will be directed to take pictures of themselves from different angles and poses and can work in teams to get this accomplished. Then they will add a painterly effect to each of their own photos. The students will then be given a power point of a number of historically important paintings along with the history of them, the artist, etc. Then they will be given a series of clues about the paintings, once they've figured out which painting it is according to the information given, the students will insert their own picture in place of the face/person there (or in some cases, slip in their pic where none was, but make it look natural as possible). The student with the largest number of "personalized" paintings wins! Students will be using photoshop or paint.net to create the personalized art.

The clues are taken from the history they are given and can range from which painting to work on to where in the painting the pic can be added, or which figure should be switched out for the student's. An example:

van Gogh's Cafe Terrace at Night.

Clue 1: This starry night is making me hungry. Clue 2: Ahhhh! September in Arles! Clue 3: It's chilly out tonight! Waiter, I'll have a coffee!

The clues meanings:

van Gogh did Starry Night, hungry to allude to it being a restaurant, the painting was done in September of 1888, and the waiter comment for it's an outside eatery and denotes where the pic should be placed- sitting at one of the tables.

This makes it so much more fun and personal for the kids and they actually get to be there!
Comments
Students will need cameras, photo editing software, tablets or laptops.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Find paintings from a specific era for history (i.e., Civil War, the Renaissance), or find pics or illustrations of the inside of the human body and place student pics inside a microsub in the body. Or photos of the ocean, dozens of applications where the student can be right there IN the application.
Follow-Up
The students take charge of presenting their finished product to the teacher and the rest of the class.
Materials: Memory Cards, Tripods, Hard Drives, Art Tools, Slideshow, Screen Capture
