ISTE Standards:

2. Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.

Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making. Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.
4. Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior.

Anticipatory Set (approximate time):

We will conduct a class discussion with the students. They will raise their hands to contribute what they already know about Greece. The list will be written on a KWL anchor chart. Approximate time (30 min).
Students will take turns approaching the anchor chart and writing
what questions they may have about Ancient Greece. Approximate time (30 min).

Direct Instruction (approximate time):
1. The class will get a chance to listen to a podcast created by the teacher. They will listen and follow along in the book. Each student will be given an iPod Shuffle.

2. Using their MacBooks, they will type what they heard on to Pages or Microsoft word.
After the teacher prints out the student’s notes, the teacher will then have students do
a walkabout to share what they wrote.

Guided Practice (approximate time):

1. Students will read the assigned chapter. They will then use Google, Yahoo, or Dogpile to conduct more research on the section of the chapter that was assigned to them.

2. The teacher will guide the students in a highlighting process. Students will highlight the important main ideas in their notes. They will then be guided in a step-by-step process to create a script to read for their podcast.

3. Students will practice recording themselves on the computer. Once they are
satisfied with their recording, students will save their recording on their iPod
Shuffles. They will wait for the teacher’s direction on how to submit a podcast.

Independent Practice:

1. Students will be given an opportunity to choose a book of their choice to read. They will type into pages or a word document the title, author, and a summary of the story.

2. Students will provide a personal response on what they learned from the book.
3. Students will construct a three question quiz to be recorded at the end of their discussion.

Required Materials and Equipment:

Assessment and Follow-Up:
