Length of lesson: Grade Level: 5th Title of Lesson: Adding and Subtraction Fractions Core disciplinary concept/s addressed: Fractions with unlike denominators Standards for lesson: 5.3H. Objective/s- The SWBAT: The student is expected to represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with unequal denominators referring to the same whole using objects and pictorial models and properties of operation Accountability Measures-how will students be held accountable for completing the learning activities? Students will receive a grade for final product What will I differentiate? (describe the process)
Content: Group 1 Will be pulled to back table to do practice with teacher after whole group teach to practice with teacher. Group 2 will practice with partners of same level or higher after whole group teach Group 3 Will work on 10 practice problems on own after whole group teach
Process: Students in need will use hundreds chart to help find equivalent fractions
Product: Students will have choice in how they show learning from 3 different options How will I differentiate? (describe the process)
Readiness: Parking Lot. Students will get 3 sticky Notes and write what they know and remember about adding and subtracting fractions. Put on poster-board with their name on the back.
Interest: Students will have choice on level of fractions they want to do…Higher denominators that need reducing, nixed numbers, improper fractions
Learning Profile: 1.)Design a board game using adding and subtracting fractions as cards students draw. 2.) Design a travel itinerary in which students have to calculate distances by adding and subtracting fractions 3.) Complete a worksheet on adding and subtracting fractions
Engagement Description of Activity: I start out my unit on fractions by doing an Engaged learning unit. Students have to research the differences on hedgehogs and porcupines and put answers in fractional form.
Elements of Differentiation: (i.e. differentiate student interest by listening to them to find out what they already know about the topic, connecting the new topic to lives/ interests of students) Use questions in a form using Google Classroom. Teach multiple Multiple Mountain for those who need this strategy. Technology Resources Needed: Laptops or iPads
Exploration Overview of Activity: Students will work in groups or on own to work some practice problems and make sure level of understanding is there
Elements of Differentiation: (i.e. differentiate learning process and content delivery by giving students time to work together to explore a topic/problem in a variety of ways, differentiate learning process by providing a choice of learning activities for students to explore, etc.) Group 1 Will be pulled to back table to do practice with teacher after whole group teach to practice with teacher. Group 2 will practice with partners of same level or higher after whole group teach Group 3 Will work on 10 practice problems on own after whole group teach
Technology Resources Needed: none
Explanation: Overview of Activity: Students chose final project, from 3 choices, that shows understanding of adding and subtracting fractions.
Elements of Differentiation: (differentiate learning products by encouraging students to create a variety of artifacts that represent learning, encourage students to communicate understanding of content in a variety of ways, pose questions to individual students based on readiness level, etc.) 1.)Design a board game using adding and subtracting fractions as cards students draw. 2.) Design a travel itinerary in which students have to calculate distances by adding and subtracting fractions 3.) Complete a worksheet on adding and subtracting fractions
Technology Resources Needed: Chromebooks and iPads
Elaboration: Estimated Time: 1 day Overview of Activity: Students will extend learning by finding companies that use fractions in their day to day activities Elements of Differentiation: (differentiate content by asking the students to apply information to a new situation or test additional ideas, encourage students to extend the lesson concepts, incorporate real-world connections based on student interest, etc.). Students research what businesses use fractions in daily processes
Technology Resources Needed: laptops and iPads
Evaluation: Estimated Time: 3 days Description of Activity: Students chose their final product from list . This will count as their assessment grade.
Elements of Differentiation: (differentiate by individualizing assessments based on readiness and ability, encourage students to create a variety of products to demonstrate learning as an assessment piece, etc.)
1.)Design a board game using adding and subtracting fractions as cards students draw. 2.) Design a travel itinerary in which students have to calculate distances by adding and subtracting fractions 3.) Complete a worksheet on adding and subtracting fractions
Technology Resources Needed: laptops and iPads
