Room Number: Sooner Building

Class Description:
I, along with another teacher, am beginning a Yearbook/Photographyclass at our school's Alternative Center. We are a program that provides a second chance to kids who may not have made the best choices while attending our main campus (the high school). As of this moment, we do not have any sort of art class to offer our kids. Beginning our own yearbook would allow our students to feel a sense of belonging to our school, establish unity, and give them something to be proud of accomplishing. We would like our yearbook to include only OUR students, and not the high school. The main yearbook designed and coveted by the high schooler's is not so highly looked upon or appreciated by our alternative ed. students. In fact, they are only given a two page spread which comes off as being very offensive at times. Our class would allow our students to plan, design, create, and write for their OWN book. Not only this, but they will take part in photographing and documenting the events unique unto our site. They will learn how to operate a digital camera, upload pictures, edit/crop, and implement into layouts for the yearbook. They will polish journalistic style writing and photography as well as artist, creative writing and photography, limiting them to practically nothing. The class will take various field trips to offer the students a wide variety of subjects and to demonstrate the practical use of what they are learning to the real world experience. We expect our class to promote leadership, expression, unity, and school pride.
Position:
Language Arts/Yearbook Teacher
Needs:
We have a great and urgent need for digital cameras, memory cards, and photography literature (to use in teaching our students). We have recently discovered how to implement a Yearbook/Photographyclass into our program, but do not have the materials required to begin. We are desperate for an art class of this nature to motivate our kids and to allow them some sort of self-expression, as we have NO art classes here at our alternative center.
My Philosophy:
Education is important: Bottom line. There is no sugar coating the fact that core subjects are essential to the functionality of individuals in this society. And, while I am a core subject teacher myself (Language Arts), I understand the magnitude of character, self-expression, and horizen-broadeningeffect the arts have on students. Nothing opens more doors for an at-risk individual than being given the opportunity to learn who they are and what they can achieve through the arts. Core subjects do not define a person, but an individual's ability to paint a picture, see the art in a swing at a nearby playground and snap a photo, or write a column for their yearbook all help to identify us, individualize us, give us a voice in this world. I want my kids to know that and not only prove themselves to achieve what I know they can, but to achieve what THEY know they can. This is not just my philosophy, it is the goal behind everything I teach and stand by. It is by this I live my own life.

Why Do I Teach?:
I love teaching and knowing that even a fraction of what comes across to my kids in the classroom may transfer into making them more successful individuals in life. My teachers inspired me to inspire others. I can only hope that I'm paying it forward, making as much of a difference in the lives of my students as the teachers in my life made in mine.
