Oak Mountain High School
Hometown:
Syracuse, New York
Class Information:
Students per Class: 36
Class Description:
My students are all learning English as their second language! They come from 12 different countries around the globe and speak eight different native languages! They are some of the most dedicated and hardworking students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching.
Position:
ESL Teacher
Needs:
Technology! My students are tasked with not only learning a new language and culture, but earning enough credits in a limited amount of time to receive their high school diploma. Daily, these students work to improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in hopes of soon becoming proficient in English, as well as mastering the information of their content courses. This proves challenging when the only technology available to some students is what they are able to access at school. Our classroom currently has 4 student computers and a projector.
My Philosophy:
"English is a language, not a measure of intelligence." Like all children, my students are very bright and have a lot to offer! They are not always able to communicate their knowledge to others since their English language is currently limited. Technology to help further their language acquisition would be life changing.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have always had a passion for learning and teaching. When I completed my undergrad, I knew right away I wanted to be a history teacher. My first teaching job was at an inner city high school that served a student population that was underprivileged and contained large numbers of students identified as needing special education and ESL services. Beginning in my first year of teaching, I had the pleasure of meeting and teaching students who were relocated to the area from their home countries as a result of war and genocide. My time spent with these students helped me to discover not only a passion, but a purpose for my teaching career.
