My class is a mix of students from various backgrounds. The area where I teach is a high-poverty one. Most students receive free or reduced lunch. The area is rural, with a lot of farming families that attend our school. Many of my students are behind in reading. Most of them struggle in math.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
I need hands-on technology! If students have something at their fingertips to use, feel, manipulate and experience, their learning would be enhanced!
My Philosophy:
Technology is critical in a classroom. We need to engage students with technology- and inquiry-based projects and activities. Because many students have some sort of access to technology, we need to grab them through this technology. Many know the basics of using computers so the learning curve is not large regarding knowing how to use technology. There are so many applications to increasing reading and math skills through the use of hand-held technologies. I believe in putting an iPad in a child's hand to enlarge their worlds. Closing the gap between students from middle- and high-income families and those from low-income families is crucial. All students must be reached. They ALL must have the chance to become successful in the new global economy that is their future.
