Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a 56 year old single mom with a 21 year old daughter. I finished college in 1974 and taught 3rd grade for 7 years. I decided to take a break from teaching and moved from Spartanburg,SC to Hilton Head Island, SC. I was young and started working in the food and beverage industry, first waiting tables, then managing a small restaurant. I got married and had my my daughter and decided to be a stay at home mom. I did not return to teaching until she was in the sixth grade. I was asked by her elementary school principal to teach a Gifted and Talented class. I took a full time job the next year teaching 5th grade to lower income students. We taught CORE Knowledge by E.D. Hirsch. I then taught 5th grade in the International Baccalaureate Program. I was offered a position as a 5th grade teacher at Bluffton Elementary School In Bluffton, SC. It was a much smaller school, so I decided to take a position ther as a 5th grade teacher. It is a Creative Arts School and I liked the opportunities that be created from that environment.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I want to make a difference in childrens' lives. I did it without technology for years, but it has become time for everyone to join the age of technology. All of my class, 20 students, have district issued iPads they take home everyday. We are trying to help our world by going paperless. The children were not provided ear buds. They work on different levels in my class, so they all need to have ear buds. I have already purchased them twice, but they were very inexpensive and not very dependable. If they could all have a pair that stayed at school, it would make a world of difference.
