Arkansas School Math & Science
Hometown:
Conway, AR
Class Information:
Room Number: CSE2
Students per Class: 5-20 per class
Class Description:
My classroom is an 18-seat computer lab with a projector and interactive white board. I'm always trying new technologies and some of them I share with my colleagues. I'm the "early adopter" who's not afraid to try something for the first time.
Position:
Computer Science Instructor
Needs:
My most immediate needs are a document camera and audio/video recording technologies. I produce a daily and a weekly podcast now, and I would love to be able to release a videocast of portions of my classes online. To do that requires the ability to capture those moments. I have the know-how and resources to produce the final product.
My Philosophy:
I believe the goal of education is to unlock the diverse abilities in each and every student and to celebrate and foster that potential. The only students who can make a difference are those who believe they can. The role of the teacher is to show each student that he or she has the ability to think for him or herself and to provide the intellectual substrate upon which these individuals can grow. As an educator alone, I cannot achieve this goal. Education requires more than any group of individuals can provide; the student, parents, community members, peers, and other educators must all contribute in order for the synthesis that is education to occur.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a computer science teacher at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts. My courses include Oracle database, Web Application Development, Data Structures and Algorithms, Networking, and Ethics.
College and Degrees:
I hold a BS in Computer Science from Henderson State University.
Activities:
I am cosponsor of our school's Beta Club and Future Business Leaders of America.
Favorite Books:
Crypto by Steven Levy. Fascinating!
Favorite Quotes:
"How is it that we have so many passionate dedicated educators and so many really failing schools? The problem is, that you put a good person in a bad system, the system wins every time.. We need to change the system." -Chris Lehmann
Interests:
Podcasting, blogging, exposing teachers new and old to the awesome things that can be achieved with just a little bit of technology and a lot of courage.
Employment History:
I've worked in technology and education all my life. While in college, I served as a technician for the public school district there. After graduation and before entering education, I worked as a database administrator for the Arkansas Department of Health.
Why Do I Teach?:
Teaching chose me. It turns out that the thing that is most fulfilling is explaining a topic or concept to a person and watching the fog lift. While in college, I used to tutor students in math and computer science "just for fun." It took working in industry to see how much I missed working with students.
