Our class is comprised of innovative third graders. These students are from the inner city and are part of a school population that is approximately 90% free/reduced lunch recipients. However, despite the students' home struggles, they each come to school bringing a desire and a personality that allows our classroom to function.
Position:
teacher
Needs:
Currently, we are seeking digital cameras and an ActivBoard to facilitate our science inquiry. At home, the students have little technology available to them. At school they currently have daily access to 5 classroom desktop computers and a once-a-week access to a computer lab. Unfortunately, in a society focused on technology, the current technological experiences the students are offered are limited. To be productive citizens for today and tomorrow, students need access to and training with using varied technology for productive tasks. Our mission is to learn how to manipulate digital cameras, entry-level photograph editing software, presentation software, and an ActivBoard to discover the processes of nature (ie: water cycle, plant cycle, sustainability of ecosystems, etc.)
My Philosophy:
I believe that learning occurs through experience and that every child has the ability to learn when provided the appropriate materials, environment, and instruction. As an educator, it is my job to provide for the learning of each of my students.
Personal Information:
About Me:
Ah, yes, let's begin with the hardest prompt: About Me. I've never known how to portray myself in just a blurb. I'll use an activity that my students enjoy. I will pick 5 adjectives that best describe me (as of today):
1. Bubbly
2. Corny
3. Optimistic
4. Hard-working
5. Energetic
College and Degrees:
I attended Louisiana State University. (GEAUX TIGERS!) I earned my B.S. in Elementary Education in May 2007, and in May 2008, I earned my M.Ed. in Elementary Education with a cross-concentrationin Astronomy/Oceanography.
Activities:
I am currently training for a 150 mile bike ride to support finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis; the ride is appropriately dubbed The MS Tour For A Cure. I also fiddle around with a variety of projects that most recently include building a copper fountain and creating a mosaic picture frame.
Favorite Books:
I'm going to break this into two categories.
1. Favorite Children's Books: From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Junie B. Jones Series, A Wrinkle In Time, Baby Dear, and Dr. Seuss' wondrous masterpieces.
2.Favorite Books Not Necessarily for Children: Educating Esme, Teacher Man, and quick Summer reads (whatever is on the bestseller list - ex: The Notebook, My Sister's Keeper, or Sundays at Tiffany's)
Favorite Quotes:
"To teach, or not teach is never an option." - personal quote
"Reality. It is so much more interesting than happily ever after." - Grey's Anatomy
"Go Teach 'em, Tiger!" - an inspirational message from my brother
Interests:
I thoroughly enjoy a relaxing camping trip or road trip. But when I'm staying at home, you'll find me either in the kitchen or in the garden. I love to cook - especially when I have the opportunity to be a dinner hostess. I'm currently learning the art and love of landscaping and yard maintenance.
Employment History:
Thus far I have been employed as a full-time teacher for one complete year. However, I have been a teacher since I was 12 years old and spending my summers as a camp counselor and eventually as a summer school teacher's aid. During college, I was a site-coordinator for the Delta Express Project which was a response to the effects of Hurricane Katrina and offered educationally enriching activities to the children housed at Renaissance Village (the largest FEMA trailer park in Baton Rouge). Then, in my last year as a pre-professional,I student taught for a semester in a 6th grade World History class and another semester in a 2nd grade, inclusive class. Then I proceeded to gain employment as a 4th grade teacher at Highland Elementary where I continue to teach (but now I'm afforded a 3rd grade classroom).
Why Do I Teach?:
This question is like asking a fish, "why do you swim?" Teaching is the natural inclination of my soul.
