My students come from all over the school district to showcase their talents at our magnet school for the arts. While they are vary by culture and ethnicity, they are all passionate and creative young people. Each brings his or her own talent (dance, singing, drama, visual art, etc.).
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
We need digital cameras and camcorders to truly create a multi-media classroom. The kids want to be able to create and share digital stories with their peers, family and community. They also want to be able to create other Performance-BasedLearning activities like digital movies.
My Philosophy:
As students of the 21st century which is largely based in technology, these students will be equipped with the knowledge and skill sets that will make them more marketable. Likewise, they would have the opportunity to share their learning with the larger global community-making them even more prepared for the future and connected to others outside their local community.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been teaching middle school students for six years. I was born and raised in Charleston, WV to parents who maintained high expectations for me. The result of which is my passing on those high expectations to my students. I am passionate about reading and writing, but even more passionate about ways to integrate technology into a subject that is both necessary and fun.
College and Degrees:
I graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio with a B.A. in English in 1998. In 2003 I completed my M.Ed. in Middle Childhood Education at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. In between those years I took courses at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia and Columbus State Community College in Columbus, Ohio.
Activities:
Outside of teaching I coach girl's volleyball and serve as the National Junior Honor Society advisor.
Favorite Books:
A few of my favorite books include: The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald, The Street by Ann Petry, Kindred by Octavia Butler, and Walden by Henry David Thoreau
Favorite Quotes:
"I don't give out grades, you earn them!" (I found that lovely one on a poster)
Interests:
I enjoy reading, writing, exercising, finding healthy recipes for foods I love to eat, spending time with friends and family, playing board games, and learning new things.
Employment History:
I am going into my second year as a teacher with the Hillsborough County School District. Prior to that I spent four years as a teacher with the Whitehall City School District outside of Columbus, Ohio. And prior to that I worked for a year at a Charter School in Columbus, Ohio. Now closed, the name of the school was the W.C. Handy Community Middle School for the Performing Arts. I have also worked part-time as a Teacher/Tutor with Sylvan Learning Center in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I believe in the power of knowing. While I hope that my students learn something about the subject I teach, I inherently want them to learn more than a subject. While I "teach" a subject, I also teach my students life-skills that will assist them long after the days of "book learning" have ended. I teach because I want the kids who walk into my life to be better and smarter than I am. I teach because I want my students to grow and develop in ways that they never imagined. I teach because I have a passion and thirst for knowledge and I believe that the more that one knows, the more doors of opportunity will be opened to that individual.
