Joseph Conger Elem School
Hometown:
Klamath Falls
Class Information:
Room Number: 4
Students per Class: 28
Class Description:
We have a large classroom with a coat room, sink, drinking fountain, and closet. We have several windows that view the playground, which can be a distraction at times! The biggest problem in our classroom is the temperature, as it is generally is 10 degrees hotter than outside. Fortunately most of the months we go to school are cold months, but in September and May it is difficult to focus due to the heat.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
Our classroom is behind in technology. Some classrooms in our schools have document cameras and Promethean boards, but mine is one that does not. My first priority is replacing our overhead projector with a document camera. This means we would also need a projector. When we have this equipment, a Promethean/Smart board is next on our wish list.

Why Do I Teach?:
Looking back over the last 5 years, I have realized that my reasons for teaching have changed. In college, I was fascinated by inspirational teaching stories like "There are No Shortcuts" by Rafe Esquith and "Freedom Writers." My goal was to do as these teachers did, work in a low-income school, take on extra jobs, and do whatever it took to provide necessary resources for students to have a quality educational experience. When I got my first teaching job in a new town (kindergarten, my worst fear) and was thrown into the reality of mass paperwork, observations, staff meetings, classroom management, etc…I realized my goals needed modification, at least for the time being. That year, I aimed to discover how I could provide the best learning environment possible for my students without losing my own sanity. Now, two years later and in my 3rd year teaching (new school, new grade) I still am learning to balance my teaching schedule. But my goals now are to see academic growth in my students while giving them innovative, enjoyable lessons. I teach to see a student’s face light up when they understand a new math problem. I teach to hear a child laugh with a new friend they have made this year. I teach to help children deal with feelings they may be having, whether those feelings are angry, sad, lonely, or excited. I teach students to believe in themselves and their ability to create stories, art, and music. I hope to continue my own personal growth in education. I still want to help students in need and attain better resources for lower-income schools to the degree that I did in college. But for me, it is important to continually reevaluate my goals in order to fit what my classroom needs most.
