East Iberville School
Hometown:
St. Gabriel
Class Information:
Room Number: Library
Students per Class: 350 PreK-12
Class Description:
East Iberville School serves the St. Gabriel,Sunshine, and Carville communities of Iberville Parish. This is a small rural community that is geographically separated from the greater part of our parish by the Mississippi River. Many of our students have access to learning technology, like computers and peripherals, only at school, not in their homes.
Position:
Librarian
Needs:
Our school has a T-1 network provided by the district, but computers are lacking both in number and functionality. Access to digital cameras, projectors, and creative software programs is limited. We could use mp3 players, projectors, and movie making software for a digital storytelling project I want to initiate at our school.
My Philosophy:
I believe that interactive learning, whereby students are guided by teachers to explore new areas of knowledge, is a particularly effective way to teach the mandated Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum. This approach is engaging, fun, and it hooks students' imaginations and encourages self-discovery.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a school librarian with 13 years of school library experience. I have an additional 10 years of teaching experience in English, reading, and social studies.
College and Degrees:
I have a B.S. in education and an MLIS from Louisiana State University.
Activities:
I participate in professional development opportunities on a very regular basis, particularly workshops and seminars teaching the integration of technology in the curriculum. I have presented at the local school level as well as district and state level librarian and technology conferences.
Favorite Books:
I have recently read Dave Isay's Listening Is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project. Another book I've recently enjoyed is The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein. My all-time favorite is Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.
Favorite Quotes:
What You Manifest Is Before You.... who said that??
Interests:
Reading, of course, and I've lately taken up jogging, which I find exhilarating, if not exhausting. I actually like hanging around my house, keeping up the lawn ( 3 acres), and visiting with my adult children, when they'll have me... :) I have lately been enjoying redecorating a very old, very small condominium in New Orleans that my husband and I have acquired. I spend lots of free time in NOLA, the most wonderful city on the planet!
Employment History:
I worked for 10 years in parochial schools. While teaching, I enrolled in the Master's library program at LSU and received that degree in 1993. I've worked as a librarian since 1995 in public schools.
Why Do I Teach?:
Teaching offers so many opportunities to reinvent oneself. I am always inspired by the talented people I work with. Watching a master teacher, who is not necessarily "old" or even middle-aged, ply his or her craft encourages me to try new and innovative ideas in my capacity as a librarian. It is so satisfying to work with teachers, collaborating with them on lessons, and helping to spark young minds.
