Elysian Heights Elem School
Hometown:
San Gabriel Valley
Class Information:
Room Number: Room 8
Students per Class: 25
Class Description:
I teach a 2nd grade class where 90% of the students are on the Free Lunch Program. 81% of the students are Second Language Learners (Spanish being their first language). Our school enrollment is small (299 students), so our school budget is also very small. Our classroom Room 8 has a history because of a tabby cat that resided in our room in the late 50's and 60's. They even published a book titled "A Cat Called Room 8". It was written by the principal at the time Beverly Mason. When this book was published Room 8 became known all over the U.S. and other countries. Newspaper and magazine articles were also written about Room 8. Our school has murals, cement prints made by the students back then and photographs of the cat Room 8 in the classroom, with the principal and the children.
