I teach 3 classes of science, 90 minutes each. My students are approximately 60% African American, 30% Hispanic, and 10% White/Other. We are a Title 1 inner-city school, with majority of students being economically disadvantaged.
Position:
Lead Science Teacher
Needs:
We learn science by doing! We are very active, and have many hands-on investigations going on in my classroom and also outside the classroom! As a result, my students have become great scientific thinkers! One of our big ongoing projects is that we are conducting a year long creek investigation. The creek is located behind our playground. We have learned about biotic and abiotic factors, food chains and food webs, and fossils so far by studying these things using our creek. We are really learning alot--our scores on state benchmark tests have increased over 40 points from September-December,and we plan to really showcase our knowledge in April when we take our State TAKS test! Recently, we won first place in the Fort Worth ISD Elementary Science Olympics, where we competed with schools from across the district. We need technology such as digital cameras, software, laptops, and GPS system to really beef up our investigations and creek study! We want to document findings to go along with our results and findings; we want to use a GPS system to study where our creek starts and ends; we want to create a presentation of our information so that we can "teach" younger students and community members about our outdoor ecosystem. Our ultimate goal is to promote awareness and conservation ideas so that our community will work with us in keeping this natural habitat clean! We have acquired a Smart Board, but could really use the other technology listed in our investigations and when presenting to the other students in school and our community.

Employment History:
I have been teaching since 1999. I have taught at Fort Worth ISD since 2001.
Why Do I Teach?:
I have the best job in the world! I spend my time planning experiences for children in which they can learn, think, express themselves, create, discover, wonder, inquire, and explain. What other job allows one to investigate the world around them, share that wonder and incredible journey with others, and get paid for doing it?! We are an urban, inner city school with many disadvantaged youth, and I have a saying on my wall that reads "You can explore the world without ever leaving home". We believe in that, and every day we do it. I'm having a blast, and wouldn't do anything else.
