I am a reading specialist so I work with 9-10 small groups of students each day. At these middle grades (3-5), students can resent being pulled out of class so I do my best to make our time together fun and innovative as we work on improving their reading. One way I have been able to do this is by using a lot of new technology. This year I took a class to learn how to use Moodle. I have been using this resource to teach some Blended Learning book studies and the kids really like it. They can't wait to come in and get started on their laptops. My goal for next year is to personalize learning even more by getting a class set of ipads and using those as our primary learning device.
Position:
Reading Specialist
Needs:
I would love a subscription to BrainPop for next year as I move to a personalized, digital learning model. I am the first teacher in my building to go this route and I hope to try it out and then train others. I would also love some more ipads. I have 1 right now and am in the running for a small grant to purchase 4 more. Since I work with small groups at a time, my goal is for each child to have their "own" ipad that they are assigned at the beginning of the year and then can save their work on and use everyday.
My Philosophy:
My philosophy about education is that it is always changing and you can either "get on the bus or get left behind". As teachers we don't need to know it all (its all on the Internet anyway!) but we do need to know and understand our students. It is our job to know their strengths and weaknesses and help guide them to build on their strengths and improve their weaknesses. Each child is different and technology can help us individualize our instruction.

Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I love kids and I love to help them reach their full potential. I love children's enthusiasm and willingness to try new things. I have taken more administrative-typejobs in the past but after a short bit, find that I miss working with kids directly and return to the classroom.
