I teach an Experimental Science class by teaching students with emotional disabilities how to create stained glass, fused glass, and mosaics. We experiment with all of the branches of science to make beautiful art glass. Students use science, math, and language arts to learn glazing skills that can land them a job in the community while they learn an old world art form. I work with the lowest 30% students who have trouble with reading, writing and math classes.
Position:
K-12 E/BD science teacher
Needs:
We have a green chalkboard for our technology! I am not kidding. My prior classroom had a Smart board, projector and response units and we used them daily. This room has the chalkboard and we use it! But my students respond best by interacting with their lessons and the opportunity to use technology to its fullest benefit. To have a Smart Board, projector, and response units would be Heaven! I have my personal Pulse pen in the classroom for students to use but would love to have more for those students who have processing deficits and cannot take notes when we are giving out instructions.
My Philosophy:
I have students that no one else wants. My feelings are that these students with emotional/behavioraldisabilities have learned to develop their brains in different ways and I just need to keep trying to find the best way to teach them. Life does not hand them a book at graduation - if they make it that far- on how to succeed once they leave school. My job is to provide them some job skills through the science/art glass class and to spark their interest in science and their environment. I just keep trying till I find a way to reach each child. More often than not during the past 15 years, I have managed to get them to walk down that aisle. As far as I am concerned, I have the best job in the world as I get to play with science and work with children who look at the world through very different eyes.

Why Do I Teach?:
I do not want my students to have the same lecture type teachers that I had. I find that hands-on learning engages my students with timely skills for real world experiences. I work with children who have severe emotional/behavioraldisabilities and make a difference each day for students who have failed in their home schools. Making science come alive turns on their brains and decreases their negative behaviors. I have the best job in the world! I get to play with science everyday and share those experiences with challenging students who have to be convinced that science is not magic!
