My classroom is a Comprehensive Learning Center, which is a regional program that supports students with disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder and Communication Disorder.
Position:
SPED Teacher
Needs:
Most of my students are mainstreamed for part of their day and are supported by an adult assistant. The supports are varied but typically include a visual schedule, a first and then board, social stories that apply to specific social situation that arise and a reinforcement system. There are now apps for all of these supports. The use of an I-pad makes the supports less cumbersome, less like "special education" supports, which have social implications for students, and can help students become more independent.
My Philosophy:
My philosophy is that students should be provided the most efficient and effective support systems available. Additionally, all supports should be part of a plan for the student to become as independent as possible. Supports should not inhibit social interactions and if possible should assist in social interactions. Sometimes students with disabilities can be provided some social cache when they use the latest technology and this is extremely helpful to students with disabilities who struggle to connect with their peers.
