Read 180 - high % at risk students, high % students with special needs, high % LEP students - Read 180 is a program that teaches struggling readers the fundamentals of reading comprehension and phonics, so they can find their way through all their classes. It is strictly for struggling readers, not "bubble kids," or students in regular education.
Position:
Reading teacher
Needs:
I would like to have a student response system. Most of my students are embarrassed by their situation in the classroom and this system would allow my students more freedom to respond to questions without the embarrassment.
My Philosophy:
My educational philosophy, after eight years in the classroom, is that all students can achieve success. For five years, I have been working solely with at-risk students, mainly LEP students, and have taught my students to look for success in small measures. Because of this, my students achieve success in everyday settings, slowly moving their way to the big picture -- a cap and gown.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a 27-year-old single mother who overcame multiple obstacles to live my dream as a high school teacher. Every day I celebrate the fact that the worst part of my day is over once I have to wake up. I love my job and my students, and I cannot imagine a better career for me.
College and Degrees:
I have a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts for a double major in English and history, and a teaching certificate in English, Language Arts and Reading for 8-12 grades, a supplemental certificate for ESL (English as a second language), and am currently working on my Master's degree in Library Science, simply to supplement my classroom knowledge. I will finish this degree in December, 2009.
Activities:
I love to read, spend time in my classroom, travel, and discuss various media, as well as volunteer with political campaigns and teach my students about the world.
Favorite Books:
My current favorite series is the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer, though I love almost all fantasy fiction, which started with Harry Potter by JK Rowling. My top favorite author, however, is Jane Austen, and named my daughter Lizzie because of Ms. Austen.
Favorite Quotes:
"Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.” --CS Lewis
Interests:
politics, reading, exercising, sleeping, etc.
Employment History:
For five years, I have been employed in Pasadena ISD, before that I was a substitute with Nacogdoches ISD.
Why Do I Teach?:
Truly, I cannot imagine doing anything else. I began teaching because of a love for reading and writing. I stayed teaching because of a love for students and education.
