My classroom is composed of fifteen students grades 3-5, except for one kindergarden student who was placed with me at the parent's request. I serve students with a variety of needs such as reading, writing , math and social skills training. They have various disabilities such as autism, various levels of mental retardation, behavior emotional disabilities , other health impairments and specific learning disabilities. Students remain in the class from as little as 45 minutes to as long as 4 hours.

The students in my class ALL learn from hands on and visual learning experiences. By providing them with meaningful reading and writing experiences I believe they will learn additional skills as well as generalize previous skills that have been taught.

About Me:
I have two wonderful children. I have a twelve year old daughter and a four year old adopted son. My husband and I have been married for close to 15 years.
College and Degrees:
I have a BA degree in Sociology from UNC-Asheville and a MSW from UNC-Chapel Hill. I received my teaching certificate as a lateral entry teacher in 2005.
Activities:
I enjoy spending time with my family hiking, fishing and camping. I also teach Sunday School, Mission Friends, serve on various committees at church and am on the school PTO Board.
Favorite Books:
I enjoy children's books and using them to teach a variety of skills in the classroom. Some of my favorite books are Tough Boris, Duck on a Bike, and Barefoot.
Employment History:
I have taught at Youngsville Elementary School for the past seven years. Prior to this I was a Unit Manager in a residential hospital working with people who are developmentally disabled.
Why Do I Teach?:
I believe that I have been called to teach. I strive to instill the belief in all children that they can learn and that they are smart and that they have worth.
