Shahala Middle School
Hometown:
Vancouver
Class Information:
Room Number: 404
Students per Class: 50
Class Description:
We are a diverse class of gifted learners. We have families represented from accross the globe. My students are smart beyond their years and excited to learn! Their understanding and concern about world events gives me hope. We would like materials to provide an environment that can challenge each student at their own level, which is difficult when working with gifted learners. They are often forgotten and overlooked because they are meeting the requirements set forth by the state.
Position:
Science/Math Teacher
Needs:
Smartboard for presentations (student lead - to parents showing what they have learned and discovered), classroom computers... laptops would be better (we have 1 teacher computer available), MICROSCOPES, printers (laser/color), ink/toner for the printer
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a 33 year old cancer survivor. I teach 7th and 8th grade math and science to 6th grade gifted students. Our class is enthusiastic and fast paced!
College and Degrees:
I graduated with my masters in teaching from Washington State University at 22 and since recieved an endorsment in supporting English Language Learners in the classroom.
Activities:
Photography, traveling (as much as possible)... experiencing new places and cultures... I love adventure! Hiking, exploring, being outdoors are all on my top 10 list. I'm a school nerd in that I love applying for (more so getting) grants and research projects. I'm willing to work for materials.
Favorite Books:
Pride and Prejudice - I love her spirit and when she reluctantly accepts her own misconceptions.
Interests:
I LOVE photography! In those days it was true black and white, dark room and all. Other interests include math, science, teaching strategies, creative lessons/projects
Why Do I Teach?:
There are so many reasons, but the main drive was the "lack" of my own education. I do not want my students to slip through the system without discovering how empowering education can be. I want them to to feel the excitment that comes with accomplishment and the thrill of achievement. I want to connect them with their interests and inspire them as they have inspired me. When I was sick and going through cancer treatment, I still taught every week. I wanted to go, bald and in pain I wanted to go.
