We are a Title One school meaning an extremely large number of our students live in poverty. Our students basically have no cameras or computers at home so their only exposure to this type of technology is here at school.
Position:
School Guidance Counselor
Needs:
A digital camera, card and case would really make my therapy room complete. Aside from using it as part of my sandplay therapy (which I explain elsewhere) just to be able to show a child his happy face and print it out for him would be a tremendous boost to his self-esteem and moral.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been the guidance counselor here for 18 years.
College and Degrees:
I have an Educational Specialist degree from the University of South Carolina, M. Ed. from Clemson University, and a Bachlor of Arts from Columbia College in Columbia, SC.
Activities:
I have a lot of fun taking care of Macy, my 6 year old Maltese, who comes to school with me every day. She "plays the piano and sings" for the children and is a better therapist than I.
Favorite Books:
The Heart of Christianity, East of Eden, The Clan of the Cave Bear are three of the books I would find at the top of my list.
Favorite Quotes:
"If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got."
Interests:
My husband and I love to go to the movies and travel to places unknown to us. I enjoy participating in study groups and spending time with family and friends.
Employment History:
I have worked for 18 years as a school counselor in Richland District I. Prior to moving to Columbia, I worked for 7 years as LD Resource teacher in Greenville County Schools. Before that I worked 3 years as a regular ed teacher in Greenville County Schools.
Why Do I Teach?:
The need is great and I adore counseling children. I am a registered play therapist and even teach play therapy to counselor intern students from USC. Being with children is in my blood. My first experience with teaching was when I was eight years old. My friends and I "taught" our little brothers and sisters in a "play school" we held for two weeks during the summer.
