About Me:
Darin Detwiler teaches U.S. History at Redmond Junior High School in Redmond, Washington. He previously served eight years as the Math and Science Department Head at BEST High School and as a district specialist in instructional technology and math/science graduation standards.

Mr. Detwiler is a decorated U.S. Navy submarine veteran, having served as a mechanical engineer on nuclear reactor and propulsion plants. He 'qualified in submarines' aboard the USS William H. Bates (SSN-680) and served during the Cold War era and First Gulf War.
College and Degrees:
Darin holds a B.A. in History and Social Studies and a B.Ed. from Western Washington University. He also holds a M.A.Ed. from The University of Phoenix.
Activities:
Darin received the 2009 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence (AASTE,) the 2006 King County “Earth Hero at School” award for environmental studies curriculum, and the 2003 NSTA/Toyota TAPESTRY award for excellence in science education.

Aftercompletion of a 2003 FDA / National Science Teacher Association / University of Maryland summer internship, Detwiler gained certification as one of only a few nationally certified Food Science and Safety Educators. He also completed the 2007-2009 Classroom Connectivity in Math and Science program conducted by The Ohio State University and Texas Instruments, Inc.

In2004, the USDA appointed Mr. Detwiler to its National Advisory Committee for Meat and Poultry Inspection in Washington, D.C. He served two terms as the head of the subcommittee on public education, advising the Secretary of Agriculture on national policy issues related to food safety.

Today,in addition to teaching, Darin is a sought-after speaker on the subject of food safety education who has appeared on TV and radio shows, including CNN and Good Morning America. He has presented before the President, Congress, universities, Texas Instruments, the National Council for Teachers of Math, the National Science Teachers Association, the Washington State Commission on Social Studies, and others.

Employment History:
Mr. Detwiler taught at Concrete (WA) Middle School in 1998, Anacortes (WA) High School from 1998-2001, BEST High School (Kirkland, WA) from 2001-2009, and Redmond (WA) Jr. High School from 2009-Present.

In the classroom, “Mr. D” has taught history, English, math, biology, physics, and forensic science. He proudly weaves integrated topics, such as math, science, literature, technology, and even food safety into his curriculum.

Darin's‘students’ often include fellow teachers, school nurses, and pre-service teachers, as he taught for five years at Bellevue Community College and taught a course for integrating math and science through forensic science at Arkansas State University.
Why Do I Teach?:
I have had many experiences, from unblelievable to unexplanable. I wish to continue to gain more experiences and to grow as an individual. The best way to do this (outside of winning the lottery) is to teach.
