Phoebus High School
Class Information:
Room Number: B22
Students per Class: 15-20 per class
Class Description:
Robotics I and II participate in building task oriented robot for FIRST competition. I also teach two Project Lead the Way courses; Digital Electronics and Computer Integrated Manufacturing
Position:
Technology Education teacher
Needs:
Money to build robot each year. The robot costs about $10,000 per year. Companies may also provide engineering mentors if they are located in Hampton area. Money may also be used for tools and machines to aid manufacturing the robot.
My Philosophy:
Let students design the robot with instruction from myself and the mentors. The adults don't DO the work. We teach, demonstrate and explain. Then the kids do the design and construction of the robot. I've had many kids say this was one of the highlights of their highs school years. Many of these kids go to college to study engineering and computer science.
Personal Information:
College and Degrees:
BS Mechanical Engineering Technology from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA
Interests:
Philosophy and religion
Employment History:
Mechanical engineer for 7 years designing automated storage and retrieval systems (high tech warehousing equipment). Then 10 years designing heating, air conditioning, plumbing and fire protection in a large architect and engineering firm. I ended as mechanical department head and project manager before I chose to become a teacher. I am still a licensed engineer in Virginia. I design advanced residential septic systems as a side occupation.
Why Do I Teach?:
Because I like to give something back to people. I designed "things" for about 17 years. Now I help kids become engineers.
