Why Do I Teach?:
In life, I have always wanted to give back to the people around me. Although the greatest gift comes from the volunteer, I think that teaching (along with the policeman and fireman) comes in a close second. It started with my wife (who is an eleven year veteran). I would listen to her stories and she would talk about the precious children (even the pain in the neck ones) and their struggles and triumphs. Her service to these kids seemed to make her whole. I hungered for that. Now I teach at multiple grade levels. From the 6th graders who are trying to find themselves as they go into Junior High to the English Language Learning Adults that I teach at night. Not to mention the pre-service teachers and college students that I work with too. All encounters provide reward. I have enjoyed tears of victory and pride and have also felt the pain of the problems that some of my students face daily. All of it reminds me to stand up and be a pillar of strength for my "people" and I will continue to teach them and reach them.
