Dr. Samuel L. Banks is located in Baltimore City. We are an inner city public high school that is composed of poor, mostly Black, and socially challenged youths. We share the campus with Thurgood Marshall High School, which also consists of the same type of students. The campus has daily disruptions with school violence, fires, and other issues that interfer with learning. The school has a very large special education population, an ED program, and sadley, no AP or electives to offer. The number of teachers are limited, most have large classes (35-40), and little supplies. We do have kids that like physical education and athletics. We do not have any physical education supplies for our classes except for the materials I have personally purchased, which has exceeded over thirty thousand dollars of my own money. The school system has not spent one dollar on any type of PE equipment since the school opened in 2001.
Position:
teacher/athletic director
Needs:
Flags and Banners for the gymnasium walls to promote the success of our athletic teams.
Electronic equipment/TV for interactive physical education classes that promote fitness and wellness.
Weight room equipment
My Philosophy:
I have always believed that children, regardless of their age, are stimulated by activity. We know there are many benefits when physical education is available to students everyday. We also know that our society is troubled with obesity, poor nutrition, and other wellness issues. The addition of equipment to expand our physical education program would be a valuable tool to improve fitness and wellness.

Why Do I Teach?:
I love teaching. I believe I make a difference and my satisfaction is seeing the kids graduate. I get my reward when they come back to visit and thank me for never giving up on them.
I spent most of my teaching career in a county school system (and college teaching) in a middle income/high income system. I've only been teaching in the inner city system for the last 9 years. It has profoundly changed how I see the world and how I feel toward a part of society that is different from my own background and experiences. I was ignorant to how others lived, and the struggles they faced everyday. As I said, my inner city teaching experiences have profoundly changed my thinking. I advocate when ever possible for my kids.
