I teach literacy and social studies to some beautiful young men and women. In order to teach the traits of writing, I encourage students to make movies on assigned topics. We also use computers to do research, reading programs (such as Reading Plus), and other programs which produce reading fluency and increase comprehension. Reading devices such as the Kindle and Nook are encouraged. Additionally, I act as the class historian and photograph students throughout the year - for special reasons and 'just because' - and do regular slide shows for the kids to build their sense of community.

My Philosophy:
Students don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care. Building relationships are key; we spend enough hours at school that it needs to feel like a second family. This security - especially for at-risk students - is huge in facilitating learning. Also, we simply must meet the needs of our 21st Century learners in the area of technology. Why should they use tech regularly everywhere BUT school? I encourage the use of all tech in the classroom; I take what they have and make it useable and relevant for school.

Why Do I Teach?:
Kids are amazing! We seldom give them credit for all the incredible thoughts and ideas they have. I find that building relationships with my students builds trust, and with this trust comes a readiness to learn. I work hard to keep my assignments creative and engaging. Technology really helps me reach students in ways that just pen and paper cannot.
