I teach English/Language Arts and Social Studies in an integrated setting to two fourth grade classes. While students are learning how to read and write, spell and use correct grammar, they are doing so with a high concentration of Social Studies based literature - although not exclusively so. My school's organization grants me the opportunity to teach all of the students in the fourth grade who have special needs. This is done in an Inclusion setting with no more than 5-6 students in each class that have special needs.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
Because of the limited number of computers in my classroom and the limited number of digital cameras in the school, the students in my class would greatly benefit from cameras and laptops that they could use to edit, organize and present the images that they capture.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a 29-year-old husband and father of two. Teaching is a prominent part of my family, as my wife, father, grandfather, grandmother, two aunts, an uncle and two cousins are all in the profession.
College and Degrees:
I completed my undergrad work at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 2000. I am on pace to finish my graduate work at the University of Cincinnati in Spring of 2008.
Activities:
In addition to my two full-time jobs: teaching and parenting, I also volunteer at a therapeutic horseback riding center for individuals with disabilities.
Favorite Books:
Like most of the Muggle world, I became enthralled by J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. On a more professional note, I always enjoy reading Educating Esme by Esme Codell and There Are No Shortcuts by Rafe Esquith.
Favorite Quotes:
While frequently attributed to Bobby Kennedy, I can't stop thinking about "Some men see things as they are and say 'Why?' I dream things that never were and say, 'Why not?'" - George Bernard Shaw
Interests:
Laying the groundwork for a better world through my teaching career and my time with my daughters keeps my mind and soul fit, but I love racquetball and inline skating for their physical benefits. Remodeling and landscaping jobs offer me a change of pace in the summer months.
Employment History:
I worked in Cincinnati Public Schools for three years before moving back home to raise my girls near my family. I then began teaching in Piqua City schools, where 2007-2008 will be my fourth year.
Why Do I Teach?:
While I believe that people can change, I feel that the most direct route to a better world in the years to come is through the children. By offering them confidence, education, love and guidance, I think that I can help them become the leaders, artists and citizens that we are so lacking today.
