Students served in this English Language Arts program represent grades four and five divided into three class periods. All students enrolled in Guideway Elementary School are taught by one teacher, therefore both grade levels and all students reap the benefits of materials.
Student populations consist of 45% Hispanic, 38% white, and 17% Black. Discipline is not an problem, students engage in cooperative learning groups and respect their peers. Our greatest obstacle is to equipt the environment to address the needs of all learning styles and add technology.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
Located in a rural poverty school mandates the importance of supporting learning for students who come from traditionally families have limited education. The critical masses are not expected by their parents to graduate from high school: students I teach are often coming from homes where parents received less than a high school education, therefore college is foreign world and expectation for their children. Resources, both in homes and school, are at a minium level. If these students are to overcome obstacles and move out of generation poverty, it will be the results of accomplishing an education. In our classroom we need adequate supplies, especially books and technology, to ensure these young people are reached at this point in their lives. By the time many are in middle school they will have gotten so far behind academically a clear picture wil be painted for potential high-school-drop-outs.While our nation is striving to dig out of a recession, and these students are going to be expected to provide money to payback loans currently being made, it is essential they have the education needed to become employed. If not, yet another generation will rely on our government for public assistance.
My Philosophy:
It is my belief that all students, reguardless of their socio-economic backgound, have a right to an education that will enable them to become productive citizens in a global society. One of the greatest moments in my life was when I was first addressed as "Teacher" by a child. Along with that title comes the responsibility to remain a life-long learner for when I become stale as a teacher, so will my students. Changes occur in the needs of my students daily - I am trying to supply learning opportunities for young children, that when they become adults, it is impossible to predict their needs. Yet in the mist of all the unknown - some variables are certain; all must have the ability to read, think at a high and abstract level, and function in a world controlled with technology. I beleive it is my responsibility to not complain about what's missing in our learning environment but to seek funding and learning opportunities for myself and the students I have the honor of teaching.
