Class Description:
Students in my classroom have multiple disabilities including learning disabilities, autism, other health impairments, cognitive impairments, physical disabilities, emotional disabilities, and social maladjustment. I teach sign language to all students in grades 1-3 each morining at arrival in the cafeteria as a visual strategy that helps students think in pictuers. This effective research-based strategy is cited by Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock in their top ten effective teaching tools. In addition, ASL helps our students communicate with the widest possible audience. They are less likely to fear children who are hard of hearing or deaf and more likely to reach out to them using multi-sensory communication skills.
