I teach one 6th grade reading class and four 6th grade language arts classes. Our school, a Title I school, is quite modest with more than 75 percent of our students on the free/reduced lunch program.
Position:
6th Grade Language Arts and Reading Teacher
Needs:
We have a definite need for technology in our classrooms. We currently share one mobile computer lab, but with the wealth of resources and interactive teaching tools on the Internet available for teachers and students, we could certainly use another mobile computer lab.
My Philosophy:
If I can help just one student realize his potential, the rest usually takes care of itself. So many of our kids don't know what's out there for them. If I can bring the outside world to our little, rural town, I feel I can ignite a spark that might never have been lit.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been a teacher, now, for more than 11 years. Whew! Time flies! I am a wife and a mother of three girls. I have spent more than twenty years in the United States Air Force Reserve and went back to school on the Troops for Teachers program to become certified in the state in which I currently live.
College and Degrees:
I have B.A. in history, but minored in English grammar. I love diagramming sentences. Weird, huh?
Activities:
I play the piano and love to sing. I am the volleyball coach at our school and have come to absolutely love the sport!
Favorite Books:
That's a tough one. The Bible first, then probably Nicholas Sparks, A Bend in the Road. Wait, I just thought of others! Terri Blackstock who wrote Last Light and Beverly Lewis who wrote sundry books about the Amish culture.
Favorite Quotes:
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!
Interests:
Family time, family time, family time. I have two teenage girls who keep me very busy.
Employment History:
First I taught elementary school in Florida at a private Christian school, and then moved to middle school and high school. After moving to Alabama, I have settled into middle school and taught history for four years and now language arts and reading.
Why Do I Teach?:
The town in which I live is a very small, poor, rural farming community. I really have a heart for these kids. I know it sounds cliche, but if I can reach just one, I feel blessed.
