Orrs Elementary School
Hometown:
Griffin, GA
Class Information:
Room Number: 121
Students per Class: 20
Class Description:
I teach in a Title 1 Distinguished school, and my students are about 80% economically disadvantaged. They are mainly visual learners. My students are diverse, of which many are transient.
Position:
Second Grade Teacher
Needs:
At Orrs Elementary it's important for our students to know how to use the infinite tools that are available to them through access to the internet. Our technology initiative is to prepare students for whatever technological advances may come, feel excited and comfortable using these resources, and to interact in ways that far surpass paper and pencil. My classroom need is for ipod touches or ipads. I would love to have at least 10 to aid my students in having ready access to the internet and the limitless resources available to them.
My Philosophy:
Our children are the leaders of tomorrow. We must invest in them because they are our future.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a 38 year old married mother of two daughters. I am a breast cancer survivor, and my youngest daughter became our family's second cancer survivor (brain) just 3 months ago, the last week our school was in session. I am grateful that I teach, allowing me to have the summer off to be with her through her surgeries. I taught through my cancer diagnosis and treatments, making the effort to be at work even when I was very sick. I wanted to make sure that my students knew I was still there for them.
College and Degrees:
I graduated from Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia with a BA degree in communications. I love kids and teaching, so I made the career transition by taking the Early Childhood GACE tests and obtaining a position at my current school. With that employment I was eligible for the TAPP Program, an alternative route to state certification.
Activities:
I teach Sunday school to adults at my church, and also work with the children in the nursery at the church when I am able. I enjoy making movies, school presentations, blogs, and speak publicly about our family's trials with cancer. I am also active in cancer awareness groups.
Favorite Books:
I love reading classics like Gone With the Wind and the Lord of the Rings novels annually. I also read a wide array of genres (mystery to non-fiction). My current read is A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard.
Favorite Quotes:
Jeremiah 29:11- For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." It's perfect for a teacher!
Interests:
I am an avid reader, love writing, and enjoy spending my time with my family and friends. I enjoy watching movies, traveling, and researching my family tree.
Employment History:
I started teaching after I worked for many years at the district attorney's office in my hometown. I worked with victims of felony crimes, ranging from property theft to acts of violence. I loved working in that career field, however the stress of dealing with crimes against children was overwhelming.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach so that I can produce successful leaders of tomorrow.
