I am a library media specialist who teaches fifth grade students about information literacy and how to communicate with media. However, I have very little technology. I have nine computers in the media center but we do not have a projector, smartboard, digital cameras so that we can create media. This year I have been bringing in my personal video and digital camera which all of my students must share. It takes a very long to time to accomplish anything when you have one camera for 21 students. I am also the media specialist for the entire district so I travel to different schools each afternoon to help teachers prepare their students to use technology. Working with the K-3 graders is a lot of fun but to really engage young learners we need equipment that is made for them and allows them to create and not just interact with a screen.
Position:
Media Specialist
My Philosophy:
It is vital that todays students become familiar with all types of technology and media. It is no longer enough to have students write research papers they must learn to use visuals and sound to create multimodal text. We cannot wait until students are in high school to start teaching them how to use this type of technology we must start out in elementary school exposing them to technologies and media so that they will understand how to use them and evaluate them appropriately.
