ADVANCED COMPOSITION
AdvancedComposition is a hybrid course, which is designed for mature, organized and college-bound learners. Students meet as an entire class once a week and once every week and a half in small writers’ workshop groups. Writers’ workshop groups provide students with one-on-one feedback, encouragement and mentoring. When students are not in class, they complete online assignments. Students write a college essay, a letter of advocacy, a reflective essay, a research piece, a media analysis and an opinion piece—as well as practice exposition, impromptu writing, vocabulary and argumentation.
CREATIVEWRITING
CreativeWriting is for students who enjoy writing for a variety of audiences—or for students who enjoy expression through writing. This course focuses on writing for a purpose (submitting and publishing pieces). Creative Writing content may include poetry, drama, short stories, humor, satire or parody, feature pieces, children’s writing, and journaling.
COLLEGE STRATEGIES
CollegeStrategies is designed for motivated, college-bound juniors. This course is an elective credit and includes practice in the types of reading college students need: fiction and non-fiction. The goal of the course is to improve comprehension through pre-reading, during-reading and post-reading strategies. In class, students use assigned readings to improve their test-taking skills, reading rate and other academic strategies. Students also learn how to successfully read and annotate a text, as well as become a more successful student.
JOURNALISM
Journalismintroduces students to the world of print media and the art of reporting, writing, and presenting the news. Students are required to take pictures, manage their time responsibly, work as a part of a team, design and advertise. Students will use state-of-the-art,computer-aided publishing tools and other hands-on production equipment. Out-of-class time is required.
Position:
English Teacher
Needs:
Over 90% of my students are seniors. Too many of my students are burned out, frustrated and itching for college. However, I’ve seen games have a positive impact on their learning and interest level. With a small budget (and the education crisis happening in Wisconsin right now), I have been unable to purchase more educational games that would support their learning and develop their writing skills. I am hoping you’ll pick my classroom so I’ll be able to do even more awesome, engaging and thought-provokingactivities in my classroom.
My Philosophy:
An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't.
Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.
Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.
