SUNY Binghamton
Hometown:
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Class Information:
Room Number: FA248
Students per Class: 50
Class Description:
I teach 50 Turkish students, non-native English speakers; I teach them Technical Communication. They are Information Systems stufents, Computer Science, and I am teaching them how to explain technical concepts to persons without a technical background.
Position:
Adjunct Lecturer
Needs:
My students have a technical vocabulary in English, but they don't know ORDINARY language terms, and they don't pick them up except in conversations with me, because they speak Turkish with each other, and technical vocabulary in most of their other classes. They need to build a normal working vocabulary in English, of a NON-technical nature. These students are university sophomores technically, but really are barely past a twelfth grade level in most cases, at least as far as how we would evaluate them. They have been protected at home, live on campus, and are hesitant to try new things. They are intelligent and friendly, but not terribly outgoing according to American standards. They are also relatively lost because they are living in a new culture, working in a language that is not their own.
Personal Information:
College and Degrees:
Bachelors - Political Science and Public Administration Masters- English Second Masters - History Coursework completed for my PhD in Comparative Literature; working on the other needed parts of my PhD
Why Do I Teach?:
To open minds -- including my own.
