Every year, I have longed to allow my students to demonstrate their knowledge of the curriculum through a performance. I would enjoy providing my students with the opportunity to take and edit digital self-portraits, create photo slideshows to retell the main and supporting details in a work of literature, or film their own reader's theatre creations. My classroom's needs consist of ten digital cameras, and three digital video cameras.
My Philosophy:
I am a teacher that approaches the idea of teaching with great reverence. I feel a strong obligation to my students, their parents, teachers at my site, teachers who will receive my students at the local middle schools, and my school's principal.
I feel it is necessary to know the expectations that my students' parents have in me and their child. Every year, I adjust the upcoming curriculum to reflect their wants. Keeping a clear line of communication between home and school is paramount. Technology is something that aids me in this quest, making it easier to stay in touch with asynchronous communication.
It is also a necessity to understand how my students learn best. A learning styles survey is filled out by every student at the beginning of the year. It is a quick way for me to understand what they enjoy, in what environment do they learn best, and how I can be most effective to them.
I have high expectations of my students and our classroom. I say "our" classroom because something that is central to my philosphy of teaching is to run a democratic classroom. Under my direction, students create a unique Purpose, Vision, and Mission statement every year. Academic and Behavior goals are correlated to the Mission statement. Every month, we review, reflect, and find ways to improve as a class. I want students to learn that self-improvement is a never ending process. It needs to be organic so that they learn flexibility and reflect on the plan's effectiveness.
The last component of my teaching philosphy is to make sure students know that I deeply care for them. I not only care about their success, their dreams, but them as individuals. To accomplish this, my classroom is open to them at all times. They can come in early, stay in at recess and lunch, or stay late to get some help, barring that I don't need to go somewhere. My classroom is filled with humor. My lessons are brimming with fun and laughter. I am firm and strict when needed, but when it's over, a hug is ready to remind students that I love and am here for them.
