My Philosophy:
We are teaching individuals…
JimmyCarter once wrote, “We are of course a nation of differences. Those differences don’t make us weak. They’re the source of our strength.” I believe that every child has his or her own story to tell. As a result, each will share something that is unique and special, bringing diversity to our classrooms. It is my desire to help young people discover who they are, so they can begin to embrace their potential. I want my students to be confident in voicing their opinions and supporting their claims with knowledge and intelligence.
Teach, facilitate and collaborate…
Tobe an effective teacher and facilitator, I will provide and support students with the skills, techniques, and awareness required to strengthen and expand their knowledge. I am committed to engaging students in a manner that motivates individual interest and increases skills in both literacy and mathematics. Math will be used to scale down and maintain proportions during the creative process; art literacy will be experienced in both the written and verbal presentations of work. Because studio classrooms naturally lead to kinesthetic learning, I will integrate multi-sensory elements, creating a well-rounded learning experience for all students. In order to support a differentiated learning plan for students, I will collaborate with students, other teachers, administrators, and parents.
Respect is earned…
My classroom will facilitate knowledge by providing a safe environment where all students can learn and communicate openly, overcoming any personal anxieties they might have. To support this environment, I will encourage students to act responsibly through their active participation in our classroom routines. My students will assist in keeping the classroom clean, organized, and enjoyable. I want my students to feel as though the classroom is ours, not just mine or the school’s. Through these daily routines, I will implement strategies such as democratic principles, class critiques, and empathetic questioning. I will always return to the idea that our learning environment is made up of individuals who all desire respect, honesty, and understanding. When appropriate, I will assume the role of facilitator, encouraging students to take on leadership positions in the classroom. These leadership opportunities will aid students in developing the skills necessary to transition into adulthood.
Young people remind me…
Through my observation of young people, I am reminded that there is always something to discover. To be a teacher is to forever be a learner; a learner of communication, ideas, strategies, techniques, processes, and more. Young people have reminded me to take time to learn, love, share, laugh, and communicate with all those who surround me. Over and over again students remind me that to be an effective teacher I will have to use talent, skill, laughter and knowledge to assist them in reaching their highest potential.
