Grade K - 6 Students perpetuate the Hawaiian Language and Culture so that the future generations will benefit from the knowledge, customs, practices and culture that was documented in the Hawaiian Language.

Needs:
We need iPods so that we can document the Hawaiian Language and Culture on podcasting.
We need Macintosh laptops so that we can document the Hawaiian Language and Culture with iMovie and save it as a QuicktTime video.
We need digital video cameras so that the children can record and doc ument the interviews of the grandparents. How did the Native Hawaiian people do things in the old days? Most of the children do not have any techie tools. My school is of low-socioeconomicstatus. Less than 5% of the children have a computer at home. Too many children are suffering the digitsal divide. Access to the technology tools will enable the students to bridge the gap. It will also enable them to capture the past for the future generations to learn. If we do not record how Hawaii used to be in the past we will not know what it is to be Hawaiian.

About Me:
I have been teaching for 20 years in the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program. It was established 20 years ago to preserve the Hawaiian Language and Culture. Our Native Hawaiian peoples were not allowed to speak Hawaiian 100 years ago. We are at risk of loosing our Hawaiian language and identity.

Interests:
I surf 4-6 foot waves on the North Shore of Hawaii. These waves have 8-12 foot faces. That fills my cup!
I paddle canoe when the waves are flat to keep my energies flowing with the ocean. I love to dance hula. I dance at the hotels in Waikiki about 3 times a month. It keeps my mind actively thinking because I need to remember all of the steps and motions that I once danced on a regular basis.

Why Do I Teach?:
I am a Native Hawaiian role model for many of my people. In the State of Hawaii 50% are Asian, 25% are Caucasian, and 25% are Hawaiian. My race is suffering from identity crisis because 100 years ago we were not allowed to speak Hawaiian. Now we are struggling to revive the language so that some of the people will know our language. When you visit Japan the Japanese know their language. When you visit Hawaii the Hawaiian people do not know their own language. So I teach to be a role model. I teach to teach the children how important it is to preserve what is ours....our identity...our language...our cultural practicies....ourbeliefs. So when people come and visit Hawaii we will be able to share what makes us special.
