My belief is that teaching is one of the most important professions one could have. Educators take on tremendous responsibility for the future of our country by molding young minds. It is through education that students become aware of their strengths and potential as citizens of our community and country. That is why I choose to teach children. I feel that it is my calling in life to strive and meet each student’s needs, as well as establishing an emotionally safe environment where students feel free to take educational risks. In order for me to learn the newest innovative techniques, I must commit to a life of continuous learning. I believe that all children are special and have something unique to offer in my classroom.
I feel that it is imperative to build positive relationships with my students, through an emphasis on listening, sincere conversation, humor, and sharing of myself. I strongly believe in a management style that establishes clear and consistent expectations for student behavior and consequences. The use of logical consequences is the discipline technique that I incorporate into my classroom. It is a way of responding to misbehavior that is respectful of children and helps them to take responsibility for their actions. The consequences of a child’s misbehavior flow logically from what the child did. For example, cleaning off school desks would be a logical consequence for the child who decides to draw on them. Through these skills I build a classroom of acceptance and care. I enjoy the company of children, but more importantly, I feel a great responsibility for their success.
It is of significant importance to hold my students accountable for the high expectations I have set forth for them to meet. I believe in challenging students to meet their potential through active learning activities that incorporate the Common Core State Standards. My main goal is to meet the needs of ALL students through differentiation. Students learn many new skills in all content areas with an emphasis on critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and writing. I encourage students to take risks as they incorporate a variety of strategies in these areas. Continued development of good work habits, responsibility, self-control, and expressive language skills are expected. Above all, I want students to feel good about coming to school everyday and to experience positive success that promote self-esteem and happy children.
