I have a wide range of ability levels ranging from gifte to multiple handicap and special education students. Our school is like many others and cannot afford supplemental materials.
Position:
first grade teacher
Needs:
The gifted students definitely need programs that take them beyond the ordinary classroom lesson. Having students that need one on one attention takes time away from some group. If we had a good supplemental math computer program, one group or the other could be using it while the other was getting the personal instruction they need. Everyone wins that way!
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been teaching elementary school for 34 years. I've seen many changes. I am married. I have a wonderful dog and two very interesting cats. I've recently aquired two fish that should be class pets but I have no good place to put them so they are home with me until winter is over and the heat if off. I have two goddaughters that are growing up much too fast!
College and Degrees:
I have a BA degree with extra hours beyond that.
Activities:
I love working out and walking. I take yoga, jazzercise, belly dance lessons, and belong to a health club. I am active in Quota International, a woman's group who raises money for hearing impaired students as well as supporting disadvantaged women and children. I also volunteer at a local nursing home.
Favorite Books:
I love Nora Roberts stories. I've also started reading some of my oldest goddaughter's books. She's a sophomore in high school. I very rarely have an opportunity to read anything other than first grade books and books I am interested in.
Favorite Quotes:
If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, think again.
It's from a set of posters I got for my classroom.
Interests:
gardening, natural healthcare, working with the elderly
Employment History:
I worked for my father at his grocery store when I was in high school and college. Then I got a teaching job and have been there ever since.
Why Do I Teach?:
I had a horrible third grade teacher at the Catholic school I attended. The nuns scared me too, mostly because of their outfits! Even though my high school counselors told me I didn't have the grades to become a teacher, I did it! I wanted kids to have a better experience than I did. I wanted to make it fun. I believe I do that.
